The Phoenix's Assistant

I can't recall if I've put this image into words before, but I know that I've thought it. I am picturing The Phoenix as training her Kind. The Assistant holds a key role in that he is their enemy. Countless times in Phoenix Halls, The Assistant is burned, impaled, poisoned, or otherwise defeated. The key is that, to the individual in The Assistant role, this is purely symbolic, whereas to Phoenix Kind it is literal, an elimination of their enemy from their realm. The Assistant becomes this revered figure over time, as Phoenix Kind matures and understands their specific relationship. Like a Dungeon Master in D&D, they are respected,  and the encounters with The Assistant are always met with excitement, but Phoenix Kind plays to win, which ultimately means killing The Assistant in some interesting and meaningful way, and then purging them once more from the realm.

Ultimately The Phoenix reveals the final state of The Assistant to her Kind. Finding The Assistant in his home territory, where combat would be literal for both sides, Phoenix Kind instead acts as reverent protectors, of the one who taught them so much, in a way that suited them perfectly.
