Darmok- Language Providing Form To Thought
I was just thinking about the Darmok episode of Star Trek: TNG again. There is definitely something more fundamentally different between the human and alien languages than just the use of words, because it is clear that communicating details, regarding the complex ideas needed for time travel, would require more information to be conveyed than what was spoken. I had never really considered what that mechanism might be though, but today it just occurred to me: this system of communication would work best if the narrative proceeded automatically in their species, without the need for communication, in nearly all situations. The only time that they would need to speak would then be to convey a juncture of meaningful choice, by using words already established in the same scenario previously, or in a scenario where new words are established for a new choice, words that reflect the choice made in that scenario specifically.
In a communal consciousness of a particular kind, this would be very handy, as it would not only maximize efficiency in between these junctures of choice for this species, but it would also create a kind of consciousness layering so that when a choice is called to the forefront using words, all involved parties are accessing the same structured framework, for when that choice was made, and how it applies now. I could see this additionally limiting the scope of what other choices might be considered in the scenario as well. I could see some phrases intentionally limiting the field to basic results, for example, like levers, and other phrases intentionally referencing an early choice, but using a more expanded field. I can picture these phrases being combined like gears of a clock or elements in a complex machine, placed precisely in an arrangement of unique design, when a topic such as philosophy comes up, for example. Some phrases would influence the whole field, others might only focus on the most current shape of language and thought, but the arrangement would be set up to ideally elicit a new scenario, a new choice, and a new phrase added to the lexicon. While humans assume that language would drive thinking and interactiom in one way, for this species the language creates a shape for the thinking instead, and once decided upon the interaction continues naturally within that shape. I am picturing thought here acting almost like pressured liquid, with a new scenario being excavated/mapped from the unknown when enough pressure builds in a location that a particular wall is knocked down.
This reminds me a lot of how I picture the civilization working at Babel, prior to language being scattered (Genesis 11). It is also quite a bit like how I imagine the subconsciouses mind interacting with itself. It is very interesting to me that this image would suddenly come to mind, fully formed, today.
