Joyless Lament, Strategic Pursuit

Oh elusive joy!
How long have I been without
The warmth of your fire?

Did I have it once?
Or have I been contriving
From faded echoes?

Is a piece of joy
Sufficient to possess joy
If structured just right?

Like living water
Is there joy which quenches thirst
For eternity?

Can pittance's taste
Mark joy's scent like a bloodhound
So joy might be found?

I cast off false joy
Do not tell me I'm joyous
And expect a smile

Expect no worship
Of cheap illusions and drugs
Which simulate joy

In calmness I say
"I will know true joy firsthand
False now flavorless."
