The Night's Reply

He rose from his place
Having fallen asleep or possibly worse
Seeing the sidewalk cracked and colored
He breathed in once more the cool night air

He found himself walking
By instinct back to the beach
Where he knew he would return
Wading out into the water
As the waves reached his chest

He was not sure what drew him there
But the water was soothing, and the air refreshing
He stared up at the stars once rewritten for his benefit
They looked foreign now, as if an age had passed

He remembered it all, he remembered too much
He knew he could return, but could not muster the will
Having left it all behind him
On some level swearing for the last time

That's when he felt her hand
Brushing his, now neckdeep in the water
Staring in silence with him
Having approached like a true lady

He had not forgotten
Not for a second, he couldn't
But he found himself relieved she had met him here
He was finally home
