Sci-fi seed: Fight Club meets X-Files
Another sci-fi if anyone wants it (this one is more reminiscent of an episode of X-Files imo than a novel though):
In the near future, hackers have identified a way to use lines of code within software to recreate electromagnets in computer hardware. The code maps where specific parts of the chips will be activated within the geometry of the chip, and then creates a spiraling pattern around a central coil, utilizing the multi-layer structure of modern chips. When activated it generates a focused magnetic field along the central line, disrupting data in a predictable fashion, bypassing any external EM shielding or anti-virus software the designers may have put in place as safeguards. The line of code is innocuous, easily detectable but ostensibly harmless, included in a simple background function on all modern computers of the day. When released it creates a Fight Club-esque chaos as targeted data files on/of every citizen are erased worldwide simultaneously (or at least upon next startup of the computer). It resets the stage for everyone on the topics of internet privacy, as each are instructed to proceed now with caution, having received a free, blank, slate.
