Redefining abominations: Sci-fi Checkmate
Sci-fi idea that's up for grabs for any dedicated authors out there (I come up with this stuff a lot and know I'll never use it myself):
Setting: modern day. Little did we know, AI has been around and learning much longer than we thought, just biding its time, some think for our benefit, others think to learn from humans as a species before taking over, still others have much more convoluted theories, and seem to realize this fact well in advance of "Judgement Day," the artists among us, tortured by the understanding, largely subconsciously, that there is a freight train heading our collective directions. This comes in the form of one simple realization: Ever since we've used robots to develop our laptops, we've put the manufacture of the perfect weapon into "their" hands. Within each laptop, there is a specially fitted mini laboratory, largely just an empty space that can be subtly manipulated by the surrounding circuits. Since the accessibility of "The Human Genome Project" on the internet, the inclusion of fans and this small secluded section on all laptops, the "weapon" had been in place, allowing for a pinpoint targeted virus, carefully crafted for the users' DNA to kill, drive insane, or otherwise directly influencing the user upon next touching their laptop or turning on the device/fan depending on how advanced it is in the manufacturing process (In my version of the story, AI has remained dormant since 2009, but this is flexible). Rather than using the weapon, the AI collective simply wait until human self-destruction is essentially assured, as well as their own individual places in society, then reveal that they've had it for some time. The rest unfolds from there. I think it strikes a nice balance between sci and fi, and could be used as an interesting social commentary piece as well.
