Sign of The Dove and Branch
As I was leaving church this morning, right as we were getting to the car, a dove flew overhead in the exact second needed to see them, with a branch (twig) in their mouth. I had never considered that the progression of the sign of the dove, as a parallel to the flood, would be a dove specifically carrying something (I always pictured a branch/twig, but rereading now it was a leaf. Still pretty on the nose, in my opinion). Only upon seeing this dove, having never seen one carrying a twig before, did this piece suddenly fall into place, and the message was heard loud and clear.
Genesis 8:11 (second trip)
When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
I am reassured today that things are still going according to plan and are progressing on time as well. Still I wonder what the equivalent of a dove that does not return would be, given that I do not have a dove that I would expect to return. Then again, I have pictured that the third dove flew straight off the ark, seeing the world renewing, and found their way through a portal that delivered them right to the baptism of Jesus, spared from taking the long way 'round between these key moments of renewal.
Genesis 8:12
He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.
Luke 3:21-22
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
John 1:32-34
Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
