Shared Symbolism III- a throwback
This is a throwback, one where I had been a little too on the nose for my tastes, so I decided to strip away the direct references and repost the entry (originally on this blog on 11/25/17, but likely posted previously on my old blog- the original lines were certainly on my old blog, from many years ago), wanting the details to remain, but the spoilers to be obfuscated.
I’m in line with the rest of your adoring fans
You come out to mingle one by one
You skip me once but I think “I didn’t come all this way to not take a swing”
Besides a girl that sweet, she probably thought I was just here with someone else
So I return to line a second time
Determined to get my due
When you stopped on me, looked to the side,
And said “I like your shirt”
I conspicuously said nothing
Cuz you had taken my last breath
So I looked to the side, kicked the ground, and handed you
My disposable camera
Your eyes darted to and fro, as if I was speaking other tongues
Then you signed that darn disposable
And mumbled something else
I couldn’t help but think “Who signs a disposable camera?!?”
So I awkwardly handed it to you again
Emboldened with every slip
So you stuck your arm out and MySpace shot it
And I won’t forget that pic
I wrapped it up with my only words
“I got this for you”
Hoping a simple charm
Could say what my heart needed to
But my lips couldn’t muster
You looked me in the eye
And all at once all lines were clear
You finished with a
“You didn’t need to do that”
Not knowing that there was nothing more
I’ve ever wanted to do
Three of the most awkward sentences
From two fairly verbally adept people
One spark felt
By two soon lovers (soon was a clear exaggeration here, but for artistic honesty's sake I left it in)
Three little unsaid seeds, sprouting into words
Our second meet was not much different
A different time, and different place
But that same old soulstruck feeling
Was written on my face
And since all my lines had vanished
Hardly an uttering escaping my since tied tongue
I smiled and hoped you felt it too
So I wouldn’t be the only one
Sure enough
In fifty tries
I hadn’t seen one miss
Your words are always fluid
Well, almost always I guess
Because when I walked up for my picture
Before even trying to say a thing
You gave me the most sincere compliment I’ve yet received
You mumbled and stuttered every word
Until catching and starting again
But the work had been done
I could tell I was not the only one
Under Love’s spell that day
I will continue to press this issue
With my pleasant persistence, miss
Because a wise woman once told me
Love often finds you when you least expect it
And my love, tag you’re it.
Cuz I’d take awkward any day (everyday)
Over a second of life without you
