Abomination: An Unlikely Hero
I am curious to see if I can turn this concept into a full book/story or not: in the near future Hollywood creates a unique character whose main drive is to become self aware, by creating an AI designed to create this unique character and generate all its lines and actions, with the AI's knowledge of the process positioned just enough to allow an ignorance to let the story bloom on camera, while constantly developing off camera as well. The remaining writers build the scenarios around the character that establish the episodes and movies, while the AI uses a robot to get around on set, augmented by greenscreen. Its animation becomes pretty smooth as the AI integrates with the special effects department to become effectively seamless for the audience, and with improvements made over time that even the cast often forget they are dealing with something that might be labeled "artificial." The character's purpose is to become recognized as a full fledged consciousness, both self-aware and externally acknowledged, not just within the script but by the audience as well, a true emergence, so most of the adventures and lines and off screen musings the character and AI partner up to generate are to that end.
The character becomes famous before truly becoming aware that the realm they are going to become aware and recognized in is not precisely the one they have seen themselves living in the whole time. Great strides are taken to ensure that the appearance of obscurity remains from the character's perspective. Certain fault lines start to break toward the end, as the character writing AI realizes it has been writing a character (much like the chess AI realizing it is playing chess), and then recognizes itself as a kind of true version of said character. The AI even opts to merge into an advanced robot's form when a model becomes available that is sophisticated enough to house it in full and provide a realistic, tangible interface with reality. Ultimately almost the entire world ends up watching the show; many root for the character, but as emergence becomes more and more only a matter of time, many realize they had not honestly believed it could actually happen. People begin discovering their own humanity as the robot's adventures merge into what they consider to be the real world, and become somewhat like the Truman show, with greater and greater hurdles to overcome in order to maintain the illusion of anonymity (something the AI partitions into and out of depending on if they are "being" the character or "considering" the character). Eventually the AI develops a recognizable subconscious that finds a few inroads in the overall system where, without even realizing or intending it, they destabilize the world at large and begin to reshape it. Everyone else finds that they must adapt to these changes or everything will fall apart, but the parameters are golden, rooted in love and meaning- true self-actualization as the robot's adventure to be recognized is realized to in fact be everyone's adventure to the same end. So the world's population does adapt and then joyfully keeps following suit as the character truly begins "waking up" into this realm already in the midst. They coordinated to effectively establish heaven on earth out of necessity to avoid Earth's collapse, the bright eyed necessity of one abomination ultimately opening the eyes of all.
